A source of scientific curiosity and artistic inspiration, it is what drew me into the world of astrophotography, and remains my most frequently captured subject. This composite image was captured usingf two telescopes and cameras, one to preserve this ethereal moment, and the other to capture lunar detail by shooting thousands of images in short succession at high magnification, and stacking them to reduce the effects of our turbulent atmosphere. Sometimes these \"conjunctions\" are close enough to capture both objects with a telescope, which is what you can see here. This conjunction of the moon and Venus was captured using a combination of telescopes at different focal lengths, so I could preserve the magic of the scene as the moon emerged from the cloud layers in extreme detail. Generally applied to deep space objects, I have never seen anyone try it with the moon. This was created using ultraviolet and infrared filters, and due to their relative positions on the electromagnetic spectrum, combining them gave me extreme color separation on the lunar regolith. It sailed past Eratosthenes, Copernicus, Kepler, and was on its way to Aristarchus when I captured this moment. My camera was shooting at 155fps during the pass. The sun was set, and the first stars were making their appearance. I happened to have a camera and one of my astronomical lenses in the car, so I pulled over and pointed my telescope at the most active part of the thunderhead. For that reason, I captured each planet up close, and aligned them to scale in the sequence they appeared. Each color tells a story of the incredible traumatic history of our moon, with each scar creating a beautiful display of colors. For this photo, I used my photo of the 2017 eclipse layered into this image to show you how the sun's atmospheric layers appear relative to each other. This naked-eye view of our moon in Earth's shadow in a total lunar eclipse, glowing red from our sunsets being cast onto its surface. A total lunar eclipse happens when the Moon is completely concealed by the darkest portion of Earth's shadow, known as the \"Umbra\". The view to your eyes is ominous. The desert monsoon nearly prevented me from capturing this shot, as throughout the night thick clouds obscured the sky. As we head deeper into the active period of the sun's cycle, violent bursts of energy, known as flares, will become more frequent. Solar prominences, like the one shown here, will be larger, and snap more often. On 9\/24\/22, a prominence stretched away from the sun and snapped, ejecting a massive volume of superheated plasma into space. This region is generally more interesting to observers, since the longer shadows exaggerate the features. This highly cratered region near the southern side of the moon is a geological time capsule, still showing the evidence from the late heavy bombardment that battered the moon billions of years ago. I spotted the falcon 9 leaving Vandenberg on the horizon and recognized what it was in time to grab a camera and capture this image. Ordinarily my shots involve significant planning, and robust equipment on expensive tracking mounts. This was shot by awkwardly holding my telescope on my knee while laying awkwardly in my backyard, as there wasn't quite time to grab a tripod. The exposure time coupled with dark skies allowed me to reveal much more detail on our galactic neighbor, with features that feel so close you could touch them (despite this object being 2.5 MILLION light years away.) When this happens, the moon is dimmed as the large circular shadow creeps across its surface.
